Network members from Bærum Hospital and Akershus University Hospital co-authored an article published by the European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging.
The authors describe volumetric measurements of the left atrium with echocardiography in 3489 individuals and in a healthy subgroup consisting of 832 individuals. Images were recorded at baseline in the Akershus Cardiac Examination (ACE) 1950 cohort study.
In the healthy subgroup, the upper normal limit of left atrial volume was higher than the current recommended cut-off. Also, contrary to the recommendations and most other previous studies, the authors found significant differences between women and men. The findings may contribute to more correct cut-offs values.
