Professor in horse cardiology, Rikke Buhl (University of Copenhagen), and Dr. Marius Myrstad (Bærum Hospital) are proud to announce the receipt of a substantial grant from the Danish Independent Research Fund. This funding will support an innovative cross-species study investigating the effects of detraining on the athlete’s heart. By integrating clinical data and blood samples from human participants in the NEXAF Detraining study (www.nexaf.no/detraining) with advanced molecular and electrical analyses in racehorses with AF, the project aims to provide new insights into how reduced training (“detraining”) affects cardiac health in general, and into the pathophysiology of exercise-induced AF in particular.
The interdisciplinary project emerged from discussions at last year’s Afib.no meeting, and the team looks forward to presenting their findings at future events. If anyone within the Afib.no community has insights, ideas, or wishes to engage with the project, we welcome all inputs.
